Acupuncture is a Holistic Therapy. It is a type of Energy Medicine based upon the theory that life energy or “qi” (pronounced “chee”) flows through the body in energy channels called “meridians”.
There are 14 main meridians. An excess, deficiency, and/or blockage can lead to physical, mental or emotional symptoms. By placing needles at specific points along these meridians, Acupuncture corrects the imbalance and harmonizes the energy.
Acupuncture is quickly making its way into mainstream medicine. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently stated that, “the data in support of Acupuncture is as strong as those for many accepted Western medical therapies.”
The NIH website reports numerous clinical studies in which Acupuncture has been shown to relieve back pain, knee pain, arthritis pain, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and to help with smoking cessation.
What Medical Conditions Can Be Helped By Acupuncture?
Acupuncture can be safely integrated with your Traditional Medical care. It is an adjunct, not a replacement, and is beneficial in treating most medical problems, including:
- GI Upset
- Kidney Pain
- Menstrual Cramps
- Sinus Congestion
- Smoking Cessation
- Sports Injuries
- Stroke Rehab
- Weak Immunity
- Weight Gain
Is Acupuncture Safe?
Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years. It is extremely safe if performed by a qualified practitioner. Dr. Silver uses only sterile, single-use disposable needles and medical skin sterilization technique.
The needles, which are approximately the diameter of a human hair, are inserted superficially and are relatively painless.
In 1997, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) panel deemed Acupuncture “remarkably safe, with fewer side effects than many well-established therapies.”
Dr. Silver, a Florida licensed M.D., will first address Traditional Medical treatment. Acupuncture and other Holistic Therapies are integrated into your medical treatment plan only if appropriate.

Why Have Acupuncture Performed By A Licensed M.D.?
A licensed M.D. is trained to diagnose serious medical conditions that might be overlooked by non-physician practitioners.
Dr. Silver is a Florida licensed M.D. who studied Acupuncture at the University of Miami School of Medicine. The program emphasized the safe and effective integration of Eastern and Western medical philosophy.
At HealthSmart M.D. you will first be evaluated for conditions that require Traditional Medical care. If appropriate, Acupuncture will be integrated into your medical treatment plan.
